Gayatri Mantra

Gayatri Mantra

Gayatri Mantra is one of the most famous mantras prevalent in Hinduism. It is a highly regarded mantra. In North India even school children have been known to recite this mantra in their classes. Gayatri Mantra has also been made famous by singers who have recited the mantra in their voice and these are played in homes during festivals or at the time of worship.

What is known about the existence of Gayatri Mantra

To the masses Gayatri Mantra is known to exist in a scripture called Taittiriya Aranyaka. It is in Taittiriya Aranyaka where the recitation of Gyatri Mantra has been described by adding Om and 'Bhur Bhuvah Swah' in front of 'Tat Savitur Varenyam'. The mantra from 'Tat Savitur Varenyam' onwards is written in Rig Veda. See Rig Veda Mantra below.

The point to consider is whether adding Om in front of a ved mantra is the correct thing to do? Something which has been narrated by God, how wise is it to make changes to it?

ॐ भूर्भुव: स्व: तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं । भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि, धीयो यो न: प्रचोदयात् ।।

Gayatri Mantra is written in the Yajurveda. Gayatri Mantra is also written partially in Rig Veda.

Correct Gayatri Mantra in Yajurveda - Adhyay 36, Mantra 3

भूर्भुव: स्व: तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं । भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि, धीयो यो न: प्रचोदयात्

Bhur Bhuvah Swah, Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi, Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat

Yajurved Adhyay 36, Mantra 3 - The actual Gayatri Mantra is given in Yajurveda and it does not have "Om" (ॐ) in the front. There is no mention of "Om" in the mantra anywhere. By putting "Om" in front of the mantra, it actually becomes useless. See image below.

yajurveda adhyay 36 mantra 3

The above picture is from Yajurveda published by Arya Samaj and therefore the translation and purport is utterly useless as Dayanand Saraswati had no knowledge about God and hence could not do justice to the mantra translation. However the purpose is to showcase that the Gayatri Mantra is as it is written in Yajurved Adhyay 36 Mantra 3.

So called learned sants, rishis and scholars claim that the actual prefix of "Om" has been mentioned in Taittiriya Aranyaka. That is the case, but they were all ignorant and didn't even know about the existence of the whole mantra in Yajurveda. The closest they could get to was Rigveda Mandal 3, Sukt 62, Mantra 10 which actually starts from "Tat Savitur Varenyam...". Taittiriya Aranyaka also suggests the prefix "Bhur Bhuvah Swah" before this mantra to make it a complete "Gayatri Mantra". It just proves that they did not have any knowledge of the Vedas. See mantra from Rigveda below.

Rigveda Mandal 3, Sukt 62, Mantra 10

RIgveda Mandal 3, Sukt 62, Mantra 10

Both these mantras are from Vedas published by Arya Samaj and even then the translations don't match. Moreover when Dayanand Saraswati did translation of Gayatri Mantra in Satyarth Prakash, he wrote a completely different meaning compared to what he did in Yajurveda. Just proves how ignorant he was.

Only a Complete Saint has the capability of solving the riddles of true mantras of Supreme God. Sant Rampal Ji has revealed this utmost knowledge and clarified that the actual Gayatri Mantra is Yajurveda Adhyay 36 Mantra 3, and the prefix "Om" before this mantra is like degrading the glory of Supreme God "Kavir Dev" and therefore is a blunder.

Om is the Mantra of Brahm

As mentioned in Bhagavad Gita Adhyay 8 Shlok 13, "Om" mantra is the sole mantra for jaap of God 'Brahm' (Kaal), and Vedas are describing the glory of Param Akshar Brahm, the Supreme / Complete God. So, this Mantra 3 of Adhyay 36 of Yajurved is praising the Supreme God, Param Akshar Brahm. Putting "Om" in front of it would be like addressing the Prime Minister as Chief Minister, which will be an insult to him.
