How many Gods are there in Quran
Does Quran mention One God or two Gods? How many Gods are there in Quran?
Quran was revealed on Prophet Muhammad via Angel Jibril (Gabriel). The instructions in Quran are considered to be the instructions from God. It is considered that the quran has been spoken by Allah (God) himself. The medium of communication was Jibril but words were that of Allah. This is the accepted notion in Islam.
At one place God in Quran says "worship me, I am your Lord".
At another place he says that there is another Supreme God.
Now the question is that if the speaker of Quran is Allah or God himself, then does that Allah talk about another God in the Quran?
The answer to the above question is yes. The speaker Allah of Quran talks about another God. He addresses himself in most verses and then addresses another God in some other verses. In Surah Furqan 25: 52 - 59 the God of Quran talks about some other Supreme God. First of all let us look at the verses from Quran below where God in Quran says "worship me".
Allah (God) in Quran says "Worship Me"
See the verses below.
Surah Taha
-
20:12 - It is truly I. I am your Lord! So take off your sandals, for you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa.
-
20:14 - It is truly I. I am God! There is no god worthy of worship except Me. So worship Me alone, and establish prayer for My remembrance.
Surah Al-Anbya
-
21:25 - We never sent a messenger before you O Prophet without revealing to him: “There is no god worthy of worship except Me, so worship Me alone.”
-
21:92 - O prophets! Indeed, this religion of yours is only one, and I am your Lord, so worship Me alone.
Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:56
-
I did not create jinn and humans except to worship Me.
Commentary: In the verses above, the knowledge giver God of Quran is clearly professing his own worship. He says "worship Me alone", "I am your Lord". The God speaking Qurans clarifies that there is no other God worthy of worship besides him.
Now consider the following verses from Quran which are in complete contrast to the above mentioned verses.
The God of Quran talks about some other Supreme God & says "Worship Him"
Surah As-Sajdah 32:4
- It is Allah Who has created the heavens and the earth and everything in between in six Days, then established Himself on the Throne. You have no protector or intercessor besides Him. Will you not then be mindful?
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255
- Allah! There is no god worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, All-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who could possibly intercede with Him without His permission? He fully knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them, but no one can grasp any of His knowledge—except what He wills to reveal. His Seat encompasses the heavens and the earth, and the preservation of both does not tire Him. For He is the Most High, the Greatest.
Surat Al Furqan 25: 52 - 59
- 25:52 - So do not obey the disbelievers, and strive against them with the Qur'an a great striving.
- 25:53 - And it is He who has released [simultaneously] the two seas, one fresh and sweet and one salty and bitter, and He placed between them a barrier and prohibiting partition.
- 25:54 - And it is He who has created from water a human being and made him [a relative by] lineage and marriage. And ever is your Lord competent [concerning creation].
- 25:55 - But they worship rather than Allah that which does not benefit them or harm them, and the disbeliever is ever, against his Lord, an assistant [to Satan].
- 25:56 - And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner.
- 25:57 - Say, "I do not ask of you for it any payment - only that whoever wills might take to his Lord a way."
- 25:58 - And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die, and exalt [ Allah ] with His praise. And sufficient is He to be, with the sins of His servants, Acquainted -
- 25:59 - He who created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days and then established Himself above the Throne - the Most Merciful, so ask about Him one well informed.
Commentary: In the verses above the God of Quran is clearly speaking about some other Supreme God who created everything in 6 days and then sat on a throne. The God of Quran is singing glory of the Supreme God and telling everyone to say His praises. He even says that you need to ask a "well informed" (Baakhabar) about that Supreme God thus showing his limitation of knowledge.
Conclusion
The conclusion that can be drawn from the above verses is as follows
- The Supreme God is different to the God of Quran.
- God giving the knowledge of Quran himself does not have the complete knowledge and that is why he is asking everyone to find a "Well Informed" (Baakhabar) for complete knowledge.
- Moreover God of Quran describes the Supreme God to be sat on a throne. This also proves that the Supreme God is in form.
